Each time we produce a new English dictionary, our aim is always the same: what can we do to make the dictionary more helpful for students of English? As a result of our research with students and discussions with teachers, we decided to focus on providing more examples for this English dictionary.
Examples help students to remember the word they have looked up in the dictionary because it is easier both to remember and to understand a word within a context (上下文). The examples also show that words are often used in many different contexts. For these reasons, we have included 40 per cent more examples in this new book.
We edit all the examples to remove difficult words and to make sure they are easier to understand.
We very much hope this new book will be of use not only to the students of English but also to the teachers.
The aim of the author in producing this new dictionary is to ______.
A.correct mistakes in the old dictionary
B.make it more helpful for students
C.increase the number of words
D.a(chǎn)dd pictures and photos

usually from one to ten dollars—can win a million dollars or more if your ticket is the winning
ticket.
We often envy these winners. How happy we would be, we think, if we suddenly had more than a million dollars in our bank account! How different the rest of our life would be!
It would certainly be different, but a recent study of thirty of these instant millionaires reveals a number of negative factors.
One of' the first changes they become aware of is a loss of privacy. They are harassed by letters and phone calls from people they don't know asking for money. They may have to move to another town or province. Sometimes they are afraid other members of the family will be kidnapped. Faced with all this stress, many lottery winners experience long periods of depression.
Their working life also changes. At first, most winners, intend to keep on working at the same job. But few of them do. A few years after they became wealthy, only seven of our thirty millionaires were working. Sometimes their fellow workers criticize them for working while others are unemployed and looking for a job.
The study concluded that sudden wealth will bring same measure of misery and possibly physical and mental illness to all lottery winners. Yet in spite of these negative factors, not a single winner was prepared to give the money back. Money may not bring happiness, but it allows us to be miserable in comfort.
How much money do people usually spend buying one lottery ticket?
A.Ten dollars.
B.One dollars.
C.One hundred dollars.
D.From one to ten dollars.

W: This spring I took a square-foot gardening class, and I decided to try soma of the things I've learned. Um, one of the most important things in square-foot gardening is that you choose a good location. You need at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunshine, You also need to choose a location that has good drainage, and it should be a convenient location. A garden is a lot more fun if you are walking by and seeing it all the time. Um, you need to decide what kind of containers you want, or, in my case, I used wooden boxes.
M: Well, Shirley, I've noticed these vertical beams. I've never seen that before. Could you explain that to us a little bit?
W: Right here we have some cantaloupe, and cantaloupe take a lot of space when you grow them out on the ground, and I don't have that much space, so I just grow them up. I just made a metal frame, and took some string. I just allow them to grow up, and they will support themselves.
M: This is amazing. I noticed in this garden, there is a vast amount of vegetation,
W: Wall, over on the far end, I have tomatoes growing vertically. In front of those I have green peppers, basil, strawberries, beets, green beans, corn, carrots and so on. Right here, as I said before, I have cantaloupe. Down at the bottom, I have some Mexican tomatoes. And down at this end, I have eggplant, another kind of pepper called banana peppers, cucumbers, okra, pumpkins...and I think that's about it.
M: I'm so impressed. I'd like to thank you very much for having us in today to look at your garden.

Step 2 Select the details that help to create a mental image in your audience’s mind and convey your feelings. Step 3 Examine the details and decide on sensory words and phrases or rhetorical devices (e.g. creating suspense, metaphors and similes, direct sensory description etc.) to make the description of your sensory experience more vivid. It's easy for computer crimes to go undetected if no one cheeks up Mint the computer is doing. But even if' the crime is detected, the criminal may walk away not only unpunished but with a glowing recommendation from his former employers.
Of course, we have no statistics on crimes that go undetected. But it's disturbing to note how many of the crimes we do know about were de tected by accident, not by systematic inspections or other security procedures. The computer criminals who have been caught may have, been the victims of uncommonly bad hick.
For example, a certain keypunch operator complained of having to stay overtime to punch extra cards. Investigation revealed that the extra cards she was being asked to punch were for dishonest transactions. In another ease, dissatisfied employees of the thief tipped off the company that was being robbed.
Unlike ether lawbreakers, who must leave the country, commit suicide, or go to jail, computer criminals sometimes escape punishment, demanding not only that they not lee charged but that they be given good recommendations and perhaps other benefits. All too often, their demands have been met.
Why? Because company executives are afraid of the bad publicity that would result if the public found out that their computer had been misused. They hesitate at the thought of a criminal boasting in open court of how he juggled the most confidential records right under the roses of the company's executives, accountants, and security staff. And so another computer criminal departs with just the recommendations he needs to con tinue his crimes elsewhere.
It can be concluded from the passage that______.
A.it is still impossible to detect computer crimes today
B.1 computer crimes are the most serious problem in the operation of financial institutions
C.computer criminals can escape punishment because they can't be detected
D.people commit computer crimes at the request of their company
